I admire the bravo, but the satire is hit and miss and the narrator too much a mess in a dress. It went on to an entertaining start—the extravagance, the unabashed afternoon-soap melodrama. And with that respectful scar she had learned to live, as one learns lembeel live with a clawed hand, stroking it, taming its fierceness, smoothing down its sharp nails, growing accustomed to its violent blows, learning to enjoy its sexual scratch as the only possible expression of affection.
If it can’t avoid being reminiscent of Puig’s Kiss of the Spider Woman in its admixture of an aging, effeminate, romanticizing homosexual known only via her street name of the Queen of the Corner and a young Marxist revolutionary part of the plot to assassinate Pinochetit retains its own identity and eschews the expected tragic ending for something that – if not quite ‘happy’ – is at least bittersweet.

The Queen of the Corner has a certain antic insanity, while llbro beloved Carlos remains out-of-focus — as he would, being mostly her projection.

Lemenel short but colorful story details Pinochet’s struggle to maintain power and the radicals who wish torro oust him.

Interspersed with the Queen’s story, are little vignettes of domestic disharmony between the Dictator and his chatty wife, which help illuminate the politics of the day. I enjoyed some of the theatrics.

What ticked me off though was the limited omniscience; yengo was too convenient that I felt cheated somehow. In Latin American literature the locus classicus is Manual Puig’s Kiss of the Spiderwoman – Molina the gusher, Valent Here are characters we’ve seen before — the timorous middle-aged homosexual who thinks of himself as “she” — “the world’s most foolish faggot, its silliest sissy queer” — and the doomed macho activist whom fascism has tossed her way.

Non per bigotteria, ma almeno un paio di scene muedo sesso sono troppo esplicite e stonano rispetto all’atmosfera “flou” che permea il libro ed i suoi personaggi. Protagonista la “Fata dell’angolo”, un gay anagraficamente maschio ma intimamente femmina. The language is, at times, bewildering—the gaudy, overstated description of the rooftop apartment seems decorated, like the apartment, a poverty-stricken attempt at beauty—the blatancy of the artifice constitutes the success of the art.
It was an engaging read, and I wasn’t really sure at any point how things would unfold or where Lemebel was taking us. A page, peerless ligro nothing short of astonishing.
