Veering between nervous excitability and debilitating ennui, he gluts his aesthetic appetites with classical literature and art, exotic jewels with which he fatally encrusts the shell of his tortoiserich perfumes, and a kaleidoscope of sensual experiences. There are lengthy discussions on aesthetics, for example, as Des Esseintes decides on the right colours for each of his rooms. Anruby, near the breeding ground of intellectual aberrations and diseases of the mind — the mystical tetanus, the burning fever of lust, the typhoids and yellow fevers of crime — he had found, hatching in the dismal forcing-house of ennuithe frightening climacteric of thoughts and emotions.
